Independent study?
Has anyone here done an independent study for their second writing requirement? What are the general guidelines for independent studies? The info on my department's website (art history) is pretty vague. I was wondering - is it possible to do one while not actually living in Charlottesville? I was thinking of doing one while living at home this summer.

I'm looking for some student filmmakers here at UVA to work with for an Independent Study in Sound Design for this semester. If anyone has any suggestions of media classes doing some sort of film production or student directors/producers, etc., that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Shipping/Moving Questions

I am an international student who wants to ship some stuffs overseas. The time it takes for shipping doesn't matter to me so I would like to know what companies have convenient, reliable, and inexpensive shipping service? I really prefer if they're able to come and pick things up at my apartment too since I don't have a car. Can someone recommend some good companies/services that fit my needs?

Also, is anyone familiar with u-heights leasing policies? I want move out before the lease ends but some policies bug me a little so I want to ask around and see how people have dealt with it before.

Thanks a lot. :)

Hello! I am applying to the M.A. program in English, but I'm wondering about how I will fit in with the English Department. I am a graduate of the Great Books program at St. John's College in Annapolis, which means I've studied a lot of literature but very little theory or criticism, and almost no 20th century theory at all. I definitely do want to study theory and criticism as a graduate student, but I don't have that background yet. Will the value of a Great Books undergrad education be understood and appreciated by the English Department? I'd be very grateful for any advice anyone can give me on that. Thank you!

How old is too old for kids to be trick or treating on the lawn? I never paid attention to whether or not older kids were around for it, and now I have a friend who is wondering if his 9 year old brother is too old?

comm textbooks
I took COMM 180 in the spring, and plan on taking COMM 201 and 202 this year. I was wondering if the COMM 180 textbook would be remotely useful for these classes or if I would be better off selling it to someone... is there any need to save the textbook? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!!

on-grounds work

I'm a rising 2nd year, looking for a non-work-study job this fall.  I was thinking about applying for library work, but I'm exploring other options as well.  Anyone who's ever worked on-grounds (or knows someone who did/does), which jobs do you recommend?  Which should I avoid?
Thanks for any help. :)

so i am a rising 3rd year transfer to the university. its about time i started looking out for internship experiences. i just wanted to ask what is the internship scene like at uva? are there plentiful opportunities for us as uva students to gain real work experience or does the village-likeness of cville hinder the possibility of interesting internship opportunities. any input would be really valuable.:)

transferring into mcintire?
Hey all- I'm a rising sophomore interested in transferring to McIntire next year (I'm just getting ahead on the research bandwagon). I'm not from Virginia nor am I already in UVA so I was just wondering how cut-throat it is to get in there (considering it's #2 on the B-school lists) and any advice any of you could give me. Thanks so much!

Has anyone here taken the CARS EMT-B class?  I'm considering it this Fall but I wanted some thought on how tough/scary the class and the subsequent 2-year commitment are.

So I have been assigned 832 Copely. I read here that it is very far and secluded. I really want to live on campus tho, so at least it wasn't gooch&dillard?

Also, as a transfer student, I wonder if any here can provide some input. I have just one class I need to take over the summer at NOVA to get my Associates. With that I'll be a third year at UVA. Is there any sense in not getting an A.S at this point? If I don't will I be classified as a Second Year?

please and thank you!

Ear Piercing Places?
Does anyone know a good place to get an ear piercing where they actually remove a core of the ear rather than just puncture?  My ears have been pierced for well over a year but my left one can close itself in 12-14 hours if I leave an earring out.

Learn about Dracula Friday
At the Jefferson Society meeting at 7:30 pm this Friday, I will be giving a lecture on the history of Vlad the Impaler and how he became Dracula, and also some stuff on funnel cake, the near-lethal conditions on the Romanian road system, the fact that Bela Lugosi's son became a corporate lawyer in LA, and some very friendly people I've met who actually drink human blood.  My book is "Sundays with Vlad" and you can find it at www.vladlives.com.  I'm a former Wahoo, and I can't wait to come back!

Anyone have any recommendations on classes which fulfill the 2nd writing requirement? It seems like most of them are either USEMS, restricted to a particular major, or have horrible ratings on ratemyprofessor. :o
